Hyundai i20 Review :: Test Drive
Hyundai India has launched its new car i20 recently and I went for a test drive of this car. This post is all about the review of i20 Asta. On the outlook i20 external appearance is more or less no different from i10, with few tweaks here and there. Though it is said that i20 will be replacing Getz, it is slightly a bit wider and lengthier than Getz. Also the height of the car has reduced a bit I would say. There are three levels of trim and a choice of 7 body colours to choose from vibrant or muted according to an individuals choice.
Seating:
In i20 front seats are excellent with good visibility though a bit lower than Santro. I felt a little bit uncomfortable since I am very much used to Santro Xing which gives an excellent visibility plus driver seating comfort for me :). Driver seat is spacious and comfortable for my height. However, I would doubt if seating will be the same for people over 6 feets. They would certainly feel the seat to be upright, steering to be low and not very comfortable. However the good news is that the front seats are adjustable in many ways. So make sure you get the right adjustment before you drive. My thighs were slightly brushing against the steering wheel when I sat initially, later on I managed to adjust the seat and then it was comfortable. Even the streering is adjustable. However the comfort level is not the same with rear seats. The legroom space is just about enough for rear seats and unfortunately is just okay for kids. It would be tough for elderly people to sit comfortably since the rear seats are too low. Also, the rear seat is very upright and this may make long journey for the passengers at the back slightly uncomfortable. Middle portion has a bulge and it will be uncomfortable for the person sitting in middle. Hence I would call it a 4 adult seater vehicle instead of 5.
Interiors:
Hyundai i20 interior dashboardThe quality of plastics used is very good and instrumental panel captures the immediate attention. It has aux-in and ipod/usb ports built into the mp3 system. It is very well laid out with smooth lines and soft edges. Even a/c and music controls are well placed. The music system can be controlled from the driver seat with ease. Also, the side mirrors can be adjusted with electronics. Another interesting aspect about i20 is that it has a very large boot space, which can easily fit it a lot of luggage if you are planning for a vacation!
Engine, Driving Comfort and Mileage:
Ride quality is incomparable with i10 and much better than Getz. However, I felt at times the drive was very bumpy. This may be attributed to Bangalore roads or the condition in which the vehicle was. The car is totally in a different league with respect, ride, build quality, directness of steering, tough body and good tyres with a respectable petrol engine of 1.2 litres Kappa felt smooth. But not smooth enough due to the bumpyness which I have mentioned already. The gear ratios seemed very short, resulting in often gear shifting at low speeds making driving a little bit stressful in heavy traffic. Also, I noticed that pickup in the second gear was poor. However, gear changing is as good as in any Hyundai branded car. Company sales executive claimed a fuel efficiency of 12-13 kmpl in city limits for i20. I doubt that, don’t go for Hyundai car if you have mileage as priority.
Price:
As usual, pricing is a big prolem for Hyundai cars. Getz failed because of pricing for its segment cars and here again we have another example. With an on road price of 5.6+ lakhs for the basic i20 model, I feel it is on the higher side. The Swift is undoubtedly the king in this segment and has the best looks, the best engine in both the petrol and diesel variants as well as the best servicing network amongst competitors. Mentioned below is the onroad price in Bangalore for i20 versions of Magna, Asta and Asta(O).

Design & Styling of Volkswagen New Polo
New Polo has some stunning design details, particularly the headlights and tail lights. The exterior surface got a lot of added attention but underneath well, quite a lot got taken away. No other car in this class has such a mature and high-end image as the New Polo. It may not have the flair of the Grande Punto or the futuristic shape of the Jazz but it looks every bit a Volkswagen with its strong haunches and solid look. The typically Volkswagen grille and stunning headlights only add to the appeal. All in all New Polo looks awesome from almost all angles. The squarish tail lamps may not be very new in design but looks very good and suits the overall stance of Volkswagen Polo. Same is with headlamps which have a black outlining like we have seen in the Ford Fiesta. Volkswagen New Polo is the best in terms of looks and styling in comparison to other B+ segemnt cars which consists of Skoda Fabia, Honda Jazz, Ford Figo, Hyundai i20, Tata Indica Vista and Maruti Suzuki Ritz. Only Fiat Grande Punto is the car which looks better than the Volkswagen New Polo

Audi A1 project quattro
Audi first unveiled its Audi A1 project quattro at the 2007 Tokyo Motor Show: a distinctive design study bringing typical Audi character to the subcompact segment. In typical Audi fashion, the three-door four-seater car showcases new ways of heightening efficiency, dynamism and motoring pleasure with a series of visionary technical solutions.
Drive train
Innovative hybrid technology
Characteristic Audi sportiness plus a whole new dimension in efficiency – it is all down to the novel combination of a state-of-the-art turbocharged FSI engine with an electric motor and innovative control electronics.
Front-wheel drive + rear-wheel drive = quattro
The drive unit for the Audi A1 project quattro showcases a fully independent and innovative hybrid technology. At work under the bonnet is a 1.4.litre TFSI engine developing 110 kW (150 bhp), whose power is directed to the front wheels by means of the S-tronic Direct Shift Gearbox. A 30 kW (41 bhp) electric motor positioned on the rear axle is able to deliver up to an additional 200 Nm of torque when the vehicle is accelerating. In boost mode, in other words when the vehicle is being powered simultaneously by the TFSI unit and electric motor for dynamic performance, the study is transformed from a front-wheel-drive car to a quattro, and power is transferred to the road in the most effective way possible.
FSI technology plus turbocharging
The Audi engineers have long since proven the performance potential of turbocharged FSI technology, both on race tracks around the world and out on the road. The new 1.4 TFSI builds on this very same concept in order to maximise efficiency on the one hand and performance on the other. Multi-hole injectors result in very homogeneous mixture formation and extremely efficient combustion. This is also an effective means of helping to cut pollutant emissions.
The 1.4 TFSI delivers 110 kW (150 bhp) at 5,500 rpm in the study, with the integrated turbocharger ensuring optimised responsiveness and even more harmonious torque build-up. 80 percent of peak torque can be summoned up from as low down as 1,250 rpm, in other words barely above idling speed. Its peak torque of 240 Nm, meanwhile, is on tap over a broad rev band from 1,600 to 4,000 rpm. And despite its power, the 1.4 TFSI sets new benchmark standards in its class for its acoustic output too.
Plug-in “refuelling”
Pure electrical operation over shorter distances, however, is a particularly attractive alternative offered by this vehicle that benefits the environment and the owner’s wallet alike – all the more so considering that the performance achieved in this mode and even the range of over 100 kilometres are perfectly satisfactory. As a result, “refuelling” the Audi A1 project quattro from the mains alone produces an unequivocal result: even making allowance for the relatively high domestic electricity costs in Germany, it is still possible to achieve a saving of around € 6.50 for every 100 km – or 70 percent – compared to the price of premium fuel.
The chassis
The dynamic chassis is tuned for sporty, agile handling combined with excellent stability, and makes cornering a particular delight. What’s more, the chassis excels with a level of ride comfort befitting of higher vehicle classes.
Large 18-inch wheels with size 225/35 R18 tyres boost both driving pleasure and safety. The braking system with its large-diameter discs (measuring 312 mm across at the front wheels) is more than a match for the drive power. Bred on the racetrack, the system promises outstanding, fade-free stopping power.
The electromechanical steering with speed-sensitive power assistance is also a boon for agile handling. The system boasts optimum steering feel combined with low sensitivity to road surface excitation and a considerable reduction in energy consumption.
Audi drive select
The Audi A1 project quattro is equipped with the Audi drive select system. This enables the driver to pre-select one of two specially adapted configurations for the drivetrain, shift characteristics and magnetic ride shock absorbers.
Efficiency mode: The default setting is the “efficiency” mode, which is automatically activated every time the engine is started. In this mode, the engine and transmission respond gently to use of the accelerator and shift paddles. This setting is ideal for a relaxed driving style, as well as offering tremendous potential for effectively lowering fuel consumption, and therefore emissions too. In the “efficiency” mode, the electric motor is not deployed as a source of additional torque; instead it is run selectively as the sole power source to bring about a tangible reduction in consumption. For this purpose, the system makes use of a host of parameters which can be fed to it via the navigation system. Thanks to the navigation system’s ability to detect differences in altitude along the route, regeneration phases as well as the increase in energy requirements on inclines can be computed before the journey has even started. This also makes for particularly efficient vehicle operation by deploying the electric motor to optimum effect.
Dynamic mode: The dynamic mode is designed to produce the dynamic yet comfortable driving sensation that is so typical of the brand and that Audi drivers have come to expect of their car. In this mode, the vehicle’s electronics also harness the torque available from the electric motor to achieve extra-sporty acceleration and excellent lateral dynamics.
Audi magnetic ride
The shock absorbers feature a highly innovative technology in the form of Audi magnetic ride, which has already made its mark in the Audi R8 high-performance sports car and in the TT. Instead of conventional damper oil, the system uses a magneto-rheological fluid, the viscosity of which can be altered by an electromagnetic field. This effect allows the damping characteristics to be adapted electronically at any time by energising the electromagnets.
Audi magnetic ride capitalises on this quality to make the appropriate damping forces available in any driving situation, thereby optimising both ride comfort and performance dynamics. A computer linked up to a system of sensors interprets the current driving situation with split-second speed. At the same time, drivers are able to choose between two different drive modes, depending on whether they wish to have a distinctly sporty drive – with the magneto-rheological fluid at a low viscosity – or a more comfort-orientated ride.
Exterior
Power and elegance
The concept car’s styling makes it look as if it has been cast from a single mould. The basic proportions, with a high vehicle body and a flat window area bordered by a coupé-like roof line, produce a virtually classic look for a vehicle bearing the four rings.
Striking silhouette
The silhouette of the roof section is traced by two striking, sturdy aluminium arches which run along the top edge of the windows to connect the A and C-posts, further emphasising the dynamic appeal of the powerfully built, compact vehicle body. The shoulder line of the Audi A1 project quattro with its Racing Red paint finish is a new interpretation of yet another trademark feature of the current Audi design. Here, the prominent double lines continue around the entire vehicle as a curvaceous band that links the front end – from which it seems to emerge – with the vehicle’s tail, that rises to create a slightly wedge-shaped effect. At the front, the Audi A1 project quattro’s lowered bonnet that is virtually embedded into the shoulder line forms a novel styling element. The tail is rounded off by a spoiler integrated into the rear window.
Sporty exclusiveness
The single-frame grille with its chequered-flag look and four interlinking rings leaves no doubt as to the study’s sporty temperament, an impression that is further underlined by the aluminium finish on elements such as the grille, mirror housings, door handles, fuel filler cap and tailpipes. The two-tone multipiece wheels that have been embellished by the addition of V-shaped polished aluminium elements lend further emphasis to the vehicle’s sportiness and exclusiveness.
Innovative LED technology
The design of the three-dimensional main headlights in innovative LED technology is especially eye-catching. The reflectors focus the light emitted by each diode to create a powerful, uniform beam whose white light colour barely places any strain on the driver’s eyes, even when driving for long distances at night. The daytime running lights are also based on LED technology, which promises extra-low energy consumption in addition to its design benefits.
interior
The interior, with its four individual seats and a surprisingly generous amount of spaciousness for this class, has a tidy, no-frills appearance. The curving wrap-around element merges the doors and the sporty cockpit into a single whole. The dashboard and centre console are designed entirely around the driver.
Sporty details
Details such as the air vents and air conditioning controls seem to be straight out of a jet plane. This same thinking was behind the soft finish of the interior’s surfaces. The round dials and the air vents, which are also circular, are reminiscent of a classic sports car cockpit à la Audi TT. The sporty seats with integrated head restraints offer levels of comfort and ergonomics that far exceed the customary standards in the subcompact segment and live up to the expectations of a typical Audi.
Sophisticated design
Ergonomics and aesthetics unite to create an ambience of clear-cut architecture and high-class appeal. This impression is further enhanced by the two-tone colour concept. The materials used for both the seat upholstery and the interior trim appeal with their high-class looks and feel. The contrasting colour scheme featuring dark panels and red stitching adds substance to the car’s overall sporty character.
The aluminium insert in the centre console comprises the mobile device as well as the start/stop button behind the gear lever. A thermos flask featuring an innovative cooling and heating system can be found in the rear portion of the centre console.
Audi Mobile Device
Innovative technology
The Audi mobile device is a portable unit that functions as an access authorisation system for the vehicle, mobile phone, navigation system and audio and video player all in one. Plus, it serves as the control unit for numerous vehicle systems which can also be programmed from outside the Audi A1 project quattro.
A portable all-in-one unit
The Audi mobile device housed in the centre console offers the entire range of functions and exact same menu navigation as the MMI system. It integrates a host of communications devices that were previously only available separately into a single, extremely space-efficient unit.
This allows the driver to use the Audi mobile device as an MP3 player, for example, or as an address database and input tool for the navigation system. What’s more, he can switch on the vehicle’s heating if required and program the sound system to suit his personal preferences, all from the comfort of his own home. Access and start authorisation for the Audi A1 project quattro is also provided by the mobile device, dispensing with the need for a key.
Operation the easy way
The unit is operated using a touchscreen, whose architecture replicates the MMI standard. The touch-sensitive screen is capable of recognising both Latin and Japanese characters, and is even able to decipher handwriting. The Audi mobile device and vehicle communicate via a WLAN connection.
Built-in peace of mind
The Audi mobile device also offers the vehicle owner an extra security function: images from a camera in the vehicle interior can be received on the device’s display in real time. If the vehicle alarm is triggered, the system activates itself and warns the owner. Should the vehicle be stolen and move out of the WLAN connection’s range, the electronics automatically switch to the car phone’s UMTS transmitter to keep the owner informed of the vehicle’s current location

Preview: 2012 Mercedes-Benz S-Class
When Mercedes rolled out the odd-looking F700 concept at last year’s Frankfurt Motor Show many speculated that it was destined to become just another pointless exercise in automotive styling. Not so according to people close to the project. Latest reports claim both the technology and design of the car will eventually make its way onto the next-generation S-Class due in 2012.
As these renderings suggest, the next S-Class will be heavily influenced by the F700 design study. Mercedes described the F700 as a "futuristic interpretation of the classic sedan," which you’d be safe to interpret as being the inspiration for the next iteration of the carmaker’s longest running sedan model.
Like the current model, the new car will come in both short and long wheelbase versions and will be powered by a range of V6, V8 and V12 powerplants – both naturally aspirated and turbocharged. However, new to the lineup will be the introduction of a highly tuned four-cylinder model. Mercedes in fact used the F700 to preview the new powertrain, dubbed DiesOtto, again giving clues as to what to expect in the next S-Class.
Mercedes also used the F700 to preview its new active PRE-SCAN suspension, a system that scours the road ahead using two lasers and automatically adjusts the suspension to suit. Another feature is the new SERVO-HMI (Human Machine Interface), which features a virtual operating assistant that the driver can converse with. Expect to see similar systems in the new S-Class and toned down versions in other future models.
Also joining the lineup will be a new range of hybrid-electric diesel models powered lithium-ion batteries. Two concept versions of the current S-Class with the new hybrid powertrains were also on display at the Frankfurt Show. The most fuel efficient version, the S300 Bluetec Hybrid, was powered by a four-cylinder hybrid drivetrain producing 224hp with a maximum torque 560Nm and managed a 44mpg fuel economy rating.
Mercedes-Benz inaugurates its new dealership in Goa
Mercedes-Benz today launched its new C 200 CGI model in India with gasoline engine technology. “The CGI technology heralds a new era in gasoline engines with improved output, optimized consumption and even more impressive emission statistics” commented Prof. Dr.-Ing. Bharat Balasubramanian, Vice President Product Innovations & Process Technologies, Group Research & Advanced Engineering, Daimler AG, speaking to media persons at the launch event.
The CGI technology makes its debut in the C-Class. Dr. Wilfried Aulbur, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India explained the rationale: “The C-Class is in most cases the first touch point of customers with our brand. Mercedes-Benz stands for exciting products and cutting edge technologies; what better way to reinforce this promise than by offering the C 200 CGI as the harbinger of the CGI revolution in gasoline engines!”
The CGI technology is the first of its kind in the world to use sophisticated petrol direct-injection engine with spray guided combustion process. CGI engines use piezo-injectors (also seen on the global F700 DiesOtto concept presented by Daimler AG). With the new technology, the engine can run with high excess air and thus offer excellent fuel efficiency. Thanks to multiple injection, it is for the first time possible to extend this lean-burn operating mode to higher rpm and load ranges too.
Among the most important components of this innovative direct petrol injection system are the fast-acting piezoelectric injectors. They have nozzles which open outwards to create an annular gap just a few microns wide. This gap shapes the fuel jet and produces a uniform, hollow-cone-shaped spray pattern. The microsecond response times of the piezoelectric injectors provide the basis for delivering multiple injections per power stroke, and thus for lean-burn operation.

2011 Audi Q7 3.0T Supercharged – First Drive Review
As the auto industry starts the great engine shrink-down in preparation for new fuel-economy standards, Audi has been perhaps the strategy’s most visible proponent. To that end, the 2011 Q7 sport utilities headed to the U.S. will drop their big iron, the 3.6-liter V-6 and 4.2-liter V-8, in favor of two versions of the company’s relatively new 3.0-liter supercharged V-6 making 272 or 333 hp. Behind the six sits the new A8’s eight-speed automatic with a broad ratio spread for better mileage. On a recent trip to Munich, we pounded the autobahn in the new Q7 and found nothing lacking.
Already installed in the A6 and S4, the 3.0 TFSI, as Audi calls it, is rapidly becoming the company’s gasoline workhorse in its medium-to-larger-size vehicles. The main features are an aluminum block that weighs just 73 pounds and displaces 2995 cc, and benzindirekteinspritzung, or direct fuel injection. The Roots-type twin-screw intercooled supercharger that mounts in the vee is relatively small at a displacement volume of just 2.0 liters, which Audi says helps deliver the fast, seamless ramp up in torque—a critical element if you hope to sell V-8 buyers on a V-6. Boost pressure peaks at 11.6 psi.
The eight-speed automatic already has debuted on the A8 sedan, and will make its way into many more Audis this fall. The gear case is slightly longer than the old six-speed’s, but because the torque converter is thinner, the overall length is shorter and weight is down by 25 pounds. Audi says the Q7 will have a ratio spread of 7.3:1. On the current six-speed, the ratio spread is 6.0:1, a difference Audi says is alone worth about five percent in fuel economy. The current 3.0-liter TDI diesel V-6 will remain in the lineup, but paired with the new eight-speed auto.
Audi has long used a sort of hidden control knob to vary the power between two otherwise identical engines, and the same is true in the 3.0 TFSI. The differing power outputs of the two U.S. versions—both of which will be labeled “3.0T Supercharged”—are mainly down to software. Compared to the engines the 3.0T replaces, the power picture remains roughly static, although there are some losses and gains on both sides.
The low-power 3.0T makes 272 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, while the 3.6-liter it replaces made 280 hp and 266 pound-feet. The hi-po 3.0T makes 333 hp and 325 pound-feet versus the 4.2-liter V-8’s 350 hp and 325 lb-ft. Fuel economy, which is 13 mpg city/18 highway with the 4.2, could rise to as high as 16 city/21 highway in the 3.0T when final numbers are announced.
Audi claims the higher-output Q7 3.0T will hit 60 mph in “under 7.0 seconds”; the last Q7 4.2 we tested hit 60 in 7.5, while the 3.6 did it in 7.9. We’re hoping for better or at least similar performances once we get our test gear aboard the two 3.0Ts. What we can say is this: Out on the unrestricted sections of the Munich–Ingolstadt autobahn, the speed in the middle lane often is 80 mph and the left lane more like 120, so acceleration is critical. Jump out in front of a fast-moving Bavarian without the necessary power to rapidly come up to speed and in the best case you’ll just get an angry headlight flash. In the worst case, there will be a crash that leaves behind only really, really small pieces.
The 333-hp Q7 3.0T acquits itself well, darting into the supersonic lane with a rapid kick-down of the eight-speed transmission and enough grunt to prevent being lasered by fast-approaching high beams. The supercharged V-6 is mostly a quiet hummer but when you give it the boot, it sounds the business, emitting the same husky rumble of the S4 only a bit more muted. Owners of the 4.2 will hardly notice a difference. The low-power V-6 is, well, slower, but otherwise pretty much the same. Make sure the onrushing Bavarians are further back before attempting the autobahn’s passing lane.
Audi may be the first to drop a V-8 from its big SUV, but others could soon follow. At the moment, BMW’s sticking with its inline-six/V-8 strategy in the X5, and Mercedes has two V-8s and a diesel in its GL, but if Audi can woo V-8 buyers with a high-horsepower V-6, it’s sure to set a pattern for an industry hungry for fuel-economy gains.
First Look: 2013 Audi A2
Audi is determined to become the world's number one premium carmaker, and the only way the brand can reach this goal is by entering new segments of the market which generate plenty of added volume. True, there is still some potential to be drawn from new niche models such as the A7 Sportback, but the big numbers are created elsewhere-for example, by extending the A3 family (with a sedan that should do well in the U.S. market), by getting the new A1 range on the road (sales start this summer in Europe), and by reviving the A2.
The European-market A2 was the brand's first try at a minicompact. Its sophisticated lightweight aluminum spaceframe architecture was great for fuel economy but it saddled the little Audi with a premium price tag, and sales never reached expectations. Since being discontinued, the car's reputation, however, has grown, and hopes are high for the new version.
"Contrary to popular belief, the A2 was not a cult car," maintains Audi boss Martin Winterkorn. "But it was a car ahead of its time. Why did it not sell in large enough numbers? Because buyers never really fell in love with the narrow and tall design. And because the bespoke high-tech aluminium spaceframe approach did not allow us to price the A2 sufficiently aggressively."
Next time round, things are going to be different. The upcoming new A2 is stamped out of steel, its designated engines are low-cost, high-efficiency three-cylinder units, and it is part of the entry-level New Small Family of cars. Specifically, Audi intends to modify the Volkswagen Space Up microvan to meet its needs. The Space Up is remarkably similar in concept to the original A2.
"With this car, Audi will offer a highly efficient solution to the mobility requirements of the modern metropolis," promises chairman Rupert Stadler.
The new model is 146 inches long and can accommodate between 7 and 35 cubic feet of luggage, sources say. Due in 2013, the A2 is expected to launch as a battery-powered e-tron-at the opposite end of the spectrum to the mighty 313-hp R8 e-tron earmarked for 2011. The zero-emission version, which features a 60-hp electric motor powered by a pack of lithium-ion energy cells, is claimed to have a driving range of 60 miles.
In a second step, the A2 will likely be offered with a still-to-be-defined hybrid drivetrain. Also under preparation is a new family of three-cylinder engines with displacements of 1.05 (gasoline) and 1.2 liters (diesel), with power outputs ranging from 60 to 75 hp.
The Audi A9 concept developed by the talented Spanish designer
The Audi A9 concept developed by the talented Spanish designer Daniel Garcia might sound too futuristic with its automatic system for repairing damage, but this surely is going to impress James Bond. Featuring a wide windscreen that extends to complete the roof, the Audi A9 touts the bodywork enhanced with a unique “electronic painting” system, allowing the owner to change its color at the touch of a button. Using nanotechnology that includes an automatic system for repairing damage and color and opacity adjustment, the A9 concept would be positioned higher than Audi’s current flagship model, the A8. As we witness the new beginning in automotive concepts with eco-friendliness dominating the designing scene, it is no surprise that automaker plans this model to run on alternative fuel. So, with all the awesomeness, we can expect Bond blasting off in the A9 next time around.
2011 Audi A8 L arrives with 500-hp W12, seating for a king-maker
Audi is pulling out its biggest gun yet for the Beijing Motor Show, and while the big news for the A8 L might be the 6.3-liter W12 and the sedan’s longer wheelbase, it’s the rear seat accommodations that have us frothing at the mouth.
Seriously, just look at it.
With an overall length of nearly 17 and a half feet, the A8 L is almost a half-foot longer than its standard sibling, with a wheelbase of 10.24 feet. Those extra inches are put to good effect, with an interior that’s enough to make a Maybach look downright spartan.
Open the lengthened rear doors and occupants are greeted by acres of leather, a full-length center console and two power-adjustable, heated and ventilated seats that not only move fore and aft, but include adjustments for cushion depth, lumbar support and seat back angle. Ten remote-controlled air-bladders massage your cares away, and if the front passenger seat - with its power-adjustable folding ottoman - cramps your style, you can move it forward with the flick of a switch.
The standard four-zone automatic climate control is manipulated by no less than 25 adjustable motors, and the massive center tunnel contains everything from a folding table to a refrigerator. It’s all first-class, from the ambient lighting to the Valonea leather, and when the time comes to put the laptop away, crank up the 1,400-watt, 19-speaker Bang & Olufsen Advanced Sound System and enjoy a movie on one of the two 10.2-inch LCD displays.
If you’re ready to give your chauffeur a rest, take solace in the fact that the W12 puts out 500 horsepower and 461 pound-feet of torque through Audi’s new eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive. The result is a remarkably quick 4.9-second run to 60 and a electrically-limited top speed of 155 mph.
The W12 will be the standard engine at launch, with a few diesel and petrol-powered engines available further down the line. We’d expect pricing for the A8 L to be revealed shortly after its official debut later this month, but in the meantime, make the jump for the full details.
Toyota pays $16.4 million U.S. safety fine
WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Toyota Motor Corp. has paid a $16.4 million fine to settle allegations by U.S. regulators the company was too slow to recall vehicles with defective accelerator pedals.
The civil penalty payment, the maximum allowed under auto safety regulations, came two days before Toyota's U.S. sales chief, Jim Lentz, was expected to appear before a congressional committee investigating Toyota recalls.
In paying the fine as expected, Toyota did not admit wrongdoing regarding the 2010 recall stemming from a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation of pedals that would not spring back as designed.
Safety regulators are also investigating whether Toyota delayed a 2009 recall of all-weather floor mats that could jam the gas pedal.
That investigation is expected to run through the summer and Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood last week would not rule out the possibility of another fine.
The "sticky pedal" and floor mat recalls involving millions of vehicles globally are at the heart of Toyota's worst safety crisis over unintended acceleration.
