Overview of Mahindra XUV500

Mahindra and Mahindra has shaked the D-segment SUV market with the launch of its all New World SUV which was been codenamed as 'World SUV W201'. Mahindra has announced the official name for their new SUV, it will be sold as XUV500. The Mahindra XUV500 has been developed from scratch and only one thing is common in Scorpio and XUV500 - the mHawk diesel engine (which has also been fine-tuned to develop 140 bhp of maximum power and 330 nm of maximum torque). XUV500 has been in talks from last one year, now the time has come and Mahindra has finally launched the XUV500. Mahindra has priced the base model of XUV500 very competitively at Rs. 10.80 lakhs only (Ex-showroom New Delhi). Produced in Mahindra's Rs 2500 crore plant at Chakan, the total investment behind the project has been Rs 650 crore. XUV500 has been tested over 2.35 mn kms, with over 250 prototypes being built. The company expects to sell 2000 units of the XUV500 every month. Conceptualized with the aim of creating an altogether new category between the Scorpio and high end SUVs, the XUV500 is the next generation SUV targeted at Generation X, where the double O connotes the added Oomph value in the product.

It is for sure that will all these comfort and safety features it will be a runaway success because other SUVs in this segment are priced around Rs. 15-20 lakhs. Mahindra XUV500 is powered by the same 2.2 litre diesel engine which is doing duty under the hood of Mahindra Scorpio but it has been fine-tuned to generate maximum power of 140 Bhp at 3750 rpm and maximum torque of 330 Nm at 1600 rpm. As far as looks are concerned Mahindra's XUV500 looks huge with jeepish front grille which is dominated by Mahindra's logo in centre. But the mesh-type look in-between the front bumper and behind front grille looks cheap and doesn't give upmarket and premium look to the SUV. But one thing is very good and commendable that Mahindra has managed to develop a really wide and huge SUV. The headlights, tail lights and fog lights features clear lens for bright and clear view. The huge wheel arcs of XUV500 gives it macho and rugged look which is further enhanced by huge 17 inch alloy wheels. At the rear it doesn't feature rear tail gate mounted spare wheel, the spare wheel has been positioned under the body of Mahindra XUV500. Designed entirely in-house at M&M’s world class research and development facility the Mahindra Research Valley at Chennai, the XUV500 is also the country’s first indigenously developed monocoque SUV with the first transverse engine offering from Mahindra. The XUV 500 features day-time running LEDs like we have seen in many cars and SUVs by Mercedes and Audi. It was expected that XUV 500 would be the most handsome SUV in its class and will compete with the likes of Chevrolet Captiva, Ford Endeavour, Renault Koleos and Toyota Fortuner. But in my opinion XUV500 has nothing very unique in terms of design and styling. It seems to be a mixed bag and we have seen this type of styling before. Only two things are unique and eye-catching, the design of door handles and huge wheel arches. The rear has diamond shaped extruded thing in centre which again looks very chinese-type styling and awkward. The side view of XUV500 is the best and it gives a huge and clean look to the sports utility vehicle. XUV500’s large tailgate opens upwards and reveals large loading area with the rear row of seats folded flat.

Volkswagen had recently updated its Jetta and Passat on the engine considering the BS IV norms and the German manufacturer based in Chakan, even revised its pricing. Next year, Volkswagen will launch an all new Jetta, which will be based on the Golf platform, but will stand out in the looks department.

The 2011 Jetta has been completely overhauled, inside and out. Its new wheelbase and exterior length are significantly bigger than its predecessor – resulting in superior performance, more space and greater comfort. The styling characteristics in the side profile of the Jetta meld into yet another interpretation of the ‘design DNA’ conceptualized by Walter de Silva, the Italian Head of Design for the Volkswagen Group and the German Head of Design for the Volkswagen Brand, Klaus Bischoff.

The new Jetta is mostly expected to be launched by Mid 2011.The new and bigger Jetta will give the Skoda Laura and maybe by then launched Renault Fluence a run for their money.

Maserati, also known as a luxury car which is a Ferrari under the skin is all set to arrive onto the Indian shores. Like Ferrari, Maserati is also owned by the Italian Fiat group and benefits from the technological prowess of the Maranello based sports car maker. The brand’s cars will be sold in the country at a price ranging from Rs. 3 to 5 crores.

Maerati has not yet announced which models from their product portfolio they plan to bring to India. The company primarily manufactures three models – Quattroporte, GranCabrio and GranTurismo. There are variants in each model family, along with customization options, but the details on which models will make it here are yet to be divulged.

The Quattroporte range is that of a four-door sedan and is powered by a 4.2-litre V8 engine with more than 400PS. The estimated price for the Quattroporte range in India could be Rs. 3 crores.

The GranTurismo family is a 2 door, 4 seater coupe powered by the same 4.2-litre V8. The company had also showcased a MC Stradale version of the GranTurismo which boasted of a more powerful 450PS engine. Expect the price to be a little more than Rs. 4 crores.



The third model is the GranCabrio, which is powered by a 4.7-litre V8 putting out around 440PS of power.

Maruti Kizashi is a sports sedan which is powered by a 2.4 litre DOHC J–Series engine. The D-segment car's powertrain is capable of producing peak power of 178 PS at 6,500rpm. The maximum torque from the engine is 230Nm at 4,000rpm in both type of transmission. Maruti Kizashi is available in Japan and the US standard with Front Wheel Drive and optional All Wheel Drive. The front is not so low-slung and seems aggressive. The flat like nose of the car sports bigger regal honeycomb grille, jewel like projector headlamps and lower grille. The upper and lower grille are fitted in a 'U' shape design. Rectangular fog lamp cluster has placed separately from the lower grille. This also add to the appeal of the vehicle. However, the rear seat is split- folding and you can use the feature for creating more space for other uses like putting in more luggage etc. Door opening is also not that much wider as other Suzuki vehicles.

At the Auto Expo 2010, the company displayed hatchback and sedan models of Toyota Etios and now finally the saloon version is launched whereas the hatchback version of Etios named Toyota Etios Liva is unveiled. The launch of this hatchback version is planned in the month of April next year. The company had worked hard to make Toyota Etios affordable and wished to use only domestic components for the same.

Toyota has promised to provide world class technology and quality with the Toyota Etios. The design concept for the car is Bold Simplicity which is referred to affordable luxury and functionality in one machine. The car will have to compete with the likes of Maruti Swift Dzire, Tata Manza and Hyundai Accent. The company will produce around 70K units of the car per year. With its small car Toyota Etios, the company intends to grab a 10 per cent market share in Indian compact cars segment by the end of the current year.

This new innovation of Toyota, Etios sedan comes equipped with 1.5 litre petrol engine. The Toyota Etios sedan's engine will produce 90 PS of peak power at 5600 rpm. The engine generates maximum torque of 132 Nm (13.46 kg-m) at 3000 rpm. This simply indicates huge power hidden in this saloon from Toyota.

The shock absorbers at front are independent MacPherson strut while the rear suspension is non-independent Torsion Beam. The suspensions are very much similar to Toyota's Yari. The frames of the cars are rigid and strong with total weight of 930 kg.

The exterior of both the cars is sporty and sharp. Front face of the Toyota Etios saloon looks like a smiling face of human with dimples at cheek (headlamps). Upper smiling grille and lower grille can be identical to this model. At the back, a big size rain wiper and rear hood are provided which look very general. Both hatchback and saloon cars from Toyota have six spoke alloy wheels. Body colour rear side view mirrors, door handles and bonnet catch the eyes of the beholder.

New BMW X 5 in India

BMW presents us the facelift operated on the second generation of the X5 model. It will be launched next month, at the Geneva Motor Show, and will hit the market this spring.

At 10 years from the invention of the SAV acronym (Sport Activity Vehicle) and 3 years from the presentation of the second generation model that created this acronym, BMW X5, the Bavarian automaker presents a middle generation facelift for its first or real off -roader. Even though changes exterior and interior changes are minimal, BMW will please its fans with the new engines introduced in X5′s range and especially with the eight-speed automatic transmission which replaces the current six-speed gearbox, considered outdated by the Bavarian manufacturer.

DESIGN

The stylistic changes are not radical, being a part of the subtle line that BMW usually applies to its models when they go through a facelift. Thus, the grid and hood remain intact, the main change being found in the bottom of the front, where the previous spoiler covered with large black plastic parts, right for an off-road model is replaced with elements more worthy of a sports model in this segment. So, they dropped the black plastic - which presence is minimized, being painted body color. In addition, and a new metal shield occurs, the other big change is being found in the front fog lamps, which goes up almost near the headlights. The new X5 comes in line with the latest BMW range by adopting lamp units visually dominated by LED rings commonly known by the name of Angel Eyes, which is used as daylight or stationary lights.

In the rear, the bumper borrows the same lines present in the front, which is also painted in body color. BMW’s designers have moved exhaust system to to the far ends of the car, receiving a new trapezoidal shape. The taillights have also been slightly redesigned and received some LEDs typical of the Bavarian range.

Remaining at the aesthetic chapter, we must also remind about the new body colors available for exterior Deep Sea Blue, Platinum Gray and Sparkling Bronze, filling the changes in X5′s DNA.

ENGINES

The most interesting changes will be felt by the fans of the brand and model under the hood, where BMW keeps its reputation as they won the recent editions of the Engine of the Year competition. Thus, the new X5 gets two new petrol engines that replace the old units having an outdated technology. First of all, we are talking about the xDrive50i version that stands out by the V8 twin-turbo engine with 407 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque making the X5 accelerate in 5.5 seconds from 0 to 60 mph and get an average mileage of 18.8 mpg. For lovers of the six cylinders in line BMW engines, the Bavarians have mounted on the new xDrive35i version a twin-turbo unit of 306 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque reaching 60 mph in 6.8 seconds and a mileage of 23.3 mpg in a mixed cycle.

The lovers of the diesel engines will be able to base on the xDrive40d version which made its debut on the 7 Series range. The 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine offers 306 HP@4400 rpm and 442 lb-ft of torque (332 lb-ft reached from 1000 rpm), values that help to get the new X5 from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds and reach 147 mph. The average mileage announced for this engine by the producer is 31.3 mpg.

The most sparing customers that will choose the new BMW X5 will probably choose the six-cylinder engine on the xDrive30d version, that developing 245 HP and 332 lb-ft of torque. After the launch of New Polo Hatchback in Indian Market Volkswagen is going to launch the sedan variant of New Polo to compete with the likes of Swift Dzire, Hyundai Verna & Fiat Linea. Outside India, Polo has a sedan variant called the Volkswagen Polo Classic, but for India Volkswagen has christened the Polo saloon as "Vento". Production bases of the current Polo Classic are located in Brazil, South Africa and China. Australia receives the Polo Classic from the base in China, and the model is the first right hand drive Chinese-manufactured car to be exported to a “developed country”.

The Vento, which means wind in both Italian and Portuguese, follows the VW tradition of naming its models after prominent winds. Volkswagen launches the New Vento at Rs 6.99 lakhs*

Delhi, August 12, 2010: Volkswagen, Europe’s largest car maker launched it’s much awaited entry level premium sedan the Vento today. The Vento will be available to customers starting at Rs 6.99 lakhs, for the 1.6 litre petrol variant and Rs. 7.99 lakhs for the diesel variant, Ex. Showroom New Delhi.

Speaking about Volkswagen’s market introduction of the Vento, Mr. Neeraj Garg, Member of Board and Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Volkswagen Group Sales India Pvt. Ltd said, “The New Vento, which stands for best in class features and German engineering is poised to set a benchmark in its segment. Designed for the Indian market it will be a strong addition to our product portfolio. The petrol variant of the Vento is equipped with a 1.6 litre engine with an output of 105PS @ 5250 rpm and a Torque of 153NM @ 3800 rpm. Design & Styling of Volkswagen Vento

The front design of Volkswagen Vento is more or less same like the hatchback version like Tata has done with Indica/Indigo and Maruti Suzuki has done with Swift/Swift Dzire. The Vento is essentially the saloon version of the recently launched Polo and it shares a common platform with the hatchback. Both the saloon and the hatch are similar upto the B-pillar, except for a different grille and lights to differentiate it from its hatchback sibling. Engine Options in Volkswagen Vento

1.6 Litre Petrol - 105 Bhp/153 Nm
1.6 Litre Diesel - 105 Bhp/250 Nm

The Vento will initially get two engine options – a petrol and a diesel. Both these engines displace 1.6 litres and both produce 105 Bhp. However, the diesel has a thumping 250 Nm of torque to the petrol motor’s 153 Nm and their driving characteristics will differ like chalk and cheese. Like in the Jetta, the petrol motor in the Vento is a naturally aspirated unit but it’s more advanced. While the Jetta’s 1.6 motor had two valves per cylinder driven off a single cam, the Vento has a four-valve head and double overhead camshafts. VW is likely to introduce the same engine in the Indian Polo after the Vento is launched.

The 1.6 common-rail diesel is brand new and comes from the same engine family as the 1.2 turbo-diesel that powers the Polo and the bigger 2-litre diesel under the hood of the Jetta. This engine comes with 90bhp and 105bhp power outputs and thankfully VW has decided to give us the more powerful engine. If the relatively lightweight Polo is anything to go by, then the Vento won’t be more than a 100kg heavier than the hatch, which should give it a good power-to-weight ratio. While the petrol Vento may not match the Honda City for pace, the diesel Vento should be a close match for the 110bhp Verna diesel. Both these engines, the diesel in particular, have been tuned more for fuel economy and driveability.

The New Volkswagen Vento - The New Volkswagen Vento will be available with a petrol and diesel variant. The petrol variant is equipped with a 1.6 litre engine with an output of 105PS @ 5250 rpm and a Torque of 153NM @ 3800 rpm. The diesel variant is also equipped with the 1.6 litre engine with an output of 105PS @ 4400 rpm and a Torque of 250 NM @ 1500-2500 rpm. Hyundai i20 Review :: Test Drive

Hyundai India has launched its new car i20 recently and I went for a test drive of this car. This post is all about the review of i20 Asta. On the outlook i20 external appearance is more or less no different from i10, with few tweaks here and there. Though it is said that i20 will be replacing Getz, it is slightly a bit wider and lengthier than Getz. Also the height of the car has reduced a bit I would say. There are three levels of trim and a choice of 7 body colours to choose from vibrant or muted according to an individuals choice.

Seating:
In i20 front seats are excellent with good visibility though a bit lower than Santro. I felt a little bit uncomfortable since I am very much used to Santro Xing which gives an excellent visibility plus driver seating comfort for me :). Driver seat is spacious and comfortable for my height. However, I would doubt if seating will be the same for people over 6 feets. They would certainly feel the seat to be upright, steering to be low and not very comfortable. However the good news is that the front seats are adjustable in many ways. So make sure you get the right adjustment before you drive. My thighs were slightly brushing against the steering wheel when I sat initially, later on I managed to adjust the seat and then it was comfortable. Even the streering is adjustable. However the comfort level is not the same with rear seats. The legroom space is just about enough for rear seats and unfortunately is just okay for kids. It would be tough for elderly people to sit comfortably since the rear seats are too low. Also, the rear seat is very upright and this may make long journey for the passengers at the back slightly uncomfortable. Middle portion has a bulge and it will be uncomfortable for the person sitting in middle. Hence I would call it a 4 adult seater vehicle instead of 5.

Interiors:

Hyundai i20 interior dashboardThe quality of plastics used is very good and instrumental panel captures the immediate attention. It has aux-in and ipod/usb ports built into the mp3 system. It is very well laid out with smooth lines and soft edges. Even a/c and music controls are well placed. The music system can be controlled from the driver seat with ease. Also, the side mirrors can be adjusted with electronics. Another interesting aspect about i20 is that it has a very large boot space, which can easily fit it a lot of luggage if you are planning for a vacation!

Engine, Driving Comfort and Mileage:
Ride quality is incomparable with i10 and much better than Getz. However, I felt at times the drive was very bumpy. This may be attributed to Bangalore roads or the condition in which the vehicle was. The car is totally in a different league with respect, ride, build quality, directness of steering, tough body and good tyres with a respectable petrol engine of 1.2 litres Kappa felt smooth. But not smooth enough due to the bumpyness which I have mentioned already. The gear ratios seemed very short, resulting in often gear shifting at low speeds making driving a little bit stressful in heavy traffic. Also, I noticed that pickup in the second gear was poor. However, gear changing is as good as in any Hyundai branded car. Company sales executive claimed a fuel efficiency of 12-13 kmpl in city limits for i20. I doubt that, don’t go for Hyundai car if you have mileage as priority.

Price:
As usual, pricing is a big prolem for Hyundai cars. Getz failed because of pricing for its segment cars and here again we have another example. With an on road price of 5.6+ lakhs for the basic i20 model, I feel it is on the higher side. The Swift is undoubtedly the king in this segment and has the best looks, the best engine in both the petrol and diesel variants as well as the best servicing network amongst competitors. Mentioned below is the onroad price in Bangalore for i20 versions of Magna, Asta and Asta(O).
